Simpson Library Technical Services

Serves as a reference for all Staff.

Basics

We are allowed to keep up to 20% of the total number of books we order. This accounts for books we decide to add to our collection or books that become lost. Generally the books we keep have higher circulation statistics. You can ask for staff input to get suggestions for which books to keep (sometimes staff will recommend keeping a book they think would complement courses at UMW). Make sure you factor in how many books are considered lost before you decide how many you can add to the collection. Most books will be added to the Young Adult section of the library but there are exceptions.

Moving Books to Permanent Collection

When we keep these McNaughton books, we want to update their record (because the records imported from the McNaughton site are not the greatest.) but we also want to keep the statistics of the book.

Look up the book in OCLC. Attach holdings (F8) but do NOT export (F5). Instead copy the number on the top left of the screen.
