Serves as a reference for all Staff.

Expectations

A student aide working the reference desk is expected to sign-in to the chat reference system (LibraryH3lp) at the start of a shift. You are not expected to be able to answer every question and should feel free to suggest the patron contact a staff member directly (remember to provide them with the staff person's contact information.) Patrons should be helped on a first-come, first-served basis - this includes both chat and in-person patrons. Please communicate with patroons that you are assisting another patron and ask them to please wait for assistance. If you have any questions about the chat reference system or how to respond to a patron please contact a supervisor or Paul Butler at 540.654.1756 or pbutler3@umw.edu.
