Position Description
A student assistant in the Research and Instruction Department works with librarians to provide research help to library patrons by answering basic questions, assisting with library equipment, and helping to maintain the reference collection.
Position Duties
- Use the library search engine (Primo) and library databases to answer basic research questions – over the phone, instant message, and in-person
- Refer detailed research questions to the appropriate subject specialist (librarian)
- Shelve books according to the Library of Congress call number system
- Keep the reference section clean, tidy, and orderly
- Assist patrons with scanners, computers, printers, and copiers
- Other library projects and duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Customer service skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Problem-solving and multi-tasking skills, especially under pressure.
- Ability to lift books, shelve books at various heights, push carts full of books
- Dependability
- Must have at least 2.0 GPA
Preferred Experience/Qualifications
- Previous experience working in libraries.
- Interest in or ability to create social media posts, video tutorials, signs, or newsletters
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, OneDrive, or Canvas
