Position Description
A Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) Student Assistant, you will work closely with full-time SCUA staff to support the preservation and organization of historical materials from UMW. Duties will include assisting in the public reading room, aiding in the collection processing room, and contributing to the Digital Archiving Lab. This role provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in archival practices and help maintain a diverse collection of rare books, journals, and physical artifacts.
Position Duties
- Digitize physical materials
- Use book scanners, flatbed scanners, and accompanying software
- Maintain storage spaces
- Assist in creating, editing, and reviewing collections
- Process incoming collections
- Assist with research questions
- Help with open hours and outreach events
- Answer questions for library patrons, including UMW students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members
- Special projects in Special Collections & University Archives
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Strong communication skills and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Comfortable working independently and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Minimum GPA of 2.0

- Preferred Qualifications:
- Have a desire to explore the career path related to working in archival or library services
- Comfortable learning new technologies
