History of the University of Mary Washington

Institutional Name Changes & Our Time as Part of the University of Virginia

Mission Statement

Our mission is to make the University of Mary Washington's history more accessible for others. We wanted to make a location to gather all the resources about the institution name changes over the years and about its time as part of the University of Virginia from 1944–1972.

About the Team

This project was created in the spring 2022 semester as part of Jeffrey McClurken's HIST 428: Adventures in Digital History course. We sought to investigate the history of the University of Mary Washington's name changes and its time as part of the University of Virginia in the mid-twentieth century. In order to achieve both aspects of this project, we split into two smaller groups, a group researching the name changes and a group researching the institution as part of the University of Virginia. We wanted to make the history of our institution, which shaped the institution as we know it today, more accessible and to collect resources for others who may be interested in researching these topics further.
