ILL information

ILL is Free, Quick, and Easy

ILL requests may be submitted by any current student, faculty, or staff member. Guest patrons, secondary card holders, students auditing a class, and people not affiliated with UMW are not eligible for this service. Most ILL requests take 1 – 2 weeks to be processed and received, although some requests may take longer.

  • How do I request an Interlibrary Loan?
  • Requests are submitted electronically through our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) system. First-time users must Create an Interlibrary Loan Account before being able to submit requests.

  • Can I request my textbook from ILL?
  • We will ask other libraries to lend us your textbook, but those other libraries decide whether or not they wish to lend the book and how long you can keep it (often between 3 weeks and a month).

  • Where can I pickup my ILL materials?
  • You will be notified via your UMW email account when your ILL materials have arrived.

    • Journal Articles: If you requested a journal article, a PDF copy will be sent electronically to your ILL account where it can be accessed by clicking on ‘View Electronically Received Articles’. It will be your responsibility to print or download each requested article within 30 days of receipt.
    • Books, Microforms, etc.: Books and microforms may be picked up at the Circulation Desk in Simpson Library. Some materials are designated library-use only by the lending library and must remain at the library for the entire loan period.
  • Can I renew my ILLs?
  • ILL books and microforms may be renewed unless the label contains the statement ‘NO RENEWAL.’

    • ILL Items labeled NO RENEWAL: If you need the item for longer, but the label says NO RENEWAL, please email ill@umw.edu to explain the issue.
    • All Other ILL Items: To request a renewal, login to the ILL system, click on the ‘Checked Out Items’ link and then click on the Transaction Number of the item you wish to renew. If an item is renewable, a link will be shown at the top of the page. You will be notified by email of the renewal due date or denial of the renewal request.
    • Renewal requests are allowed from one to seven days before the book is due. If you have any questions or problems, email ill@umw.edu.

Copyright

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the Law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of that order would involve violation of the law.
