Citing Sources

Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (8th ed.) includes three different systems for in-text citations: Citation-Sequence, Name-Year, and Citation-Name. The system you choose for your in-text references will determine how you organize the references at the end of your paper. The end references are very similar across the three systems, although the date placement is different for the Name-Year system.

At UMW, the Name-Year system is used more frequently than the other two, but different professors may prefer different systems. Consult your instructor as to which version of CSE is preferred for your class.
