Field Guide to Research Sources

What type of source did you find? Use this field guide to identify it.

Newspaper articles

What they are: Articles in newspapers, either in print or online. Newspapers are periodicals that report the news.

What they give you: Information on events at the time the article was published.

How to spot them:

  • There are two titles: the title of the article and the title of the newspaper.
  • There may be pictures.
  • There are no citations.
  • The article is written in an impersonal, "just-the-facts" tone. Or, the article is labeled as an editorial or opinion piece.
