FSEM 100V6: Arabic Cuisine

There are many types of popular sources.

On this page are some types of sources that may be useful for the Arabic Cuisine FSEM. This is not a complete list! Feel free to look for types of popular sources that aren't listed here.

Cookbooks

Simpson Library has some cookbooks available in print or electronic format. Find them using the library search box.

As we discussed in September, it's important to use the right words when searching for library books. The official Library of Congress subject term is cooking , not "cookbook."

If Simpson Library doesn't have a cookbook for the regional cuisine that you're studying, consider having a cookbook sent here from another library via Interlibrary Loan. Follow these steps:

Books typically arrive in 1-2 weeks. The service is free for UMW students.

Memoirs

Find memoirs using Google or Bing and then get them from Simpson Library (or request them from other libraries via Interlibrary Loan).

For example:

Recipes

Find recipes using a search engine such as Google or Bing.

Here are some examples of searches you might try:

  • falafel recipe (to find recipes for a certain dish)
  • Egyptian falafel recipe (to find recipes for a certain dish in the style of a certain country)
  • Egyptian recipes website (to find websites that you can browse to discover recipes)

Some recipes are in the form of videos. See Videos below.

Restaurant menus

Many restaurants post their menus on their websites.

You can also find restaurant menus on food delivery apps. In the United States, popular food delivery apps include GrubHub, DoorDash, and Uber Eats. For this class, though, I recommend looking at food delivery apps that are widely used in the Arab world, such as these:

This is not a complete list. To find more food delivery apps, try Googling "food delivery app" plus the name of a country.

TV shows

Look for cooking shows or travel shows that are focused on Arab cuisine, or that have individual episodes about Arab cuisine.

If you have access to a streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime or HBO Max, try searching shows or episodes on that platform.

Some TV shows are available for free. For example:
