While working in Special Collections, I got to look at photos and negatives taken over the university's history, some that were taken for the newspaper the Grapevine, place them in protective sleeves, look for duplicates, and describe the pictures in an Excel spreadsheet. It was a nice experience at photos taken over decades ago and seeing how much and how little the campus has changed.
Steps for handling the photos
1. Take a file folder out of the cabinet
2. Grab a manila envelope to place photos and negatives in with drawer number and title of folder written on it Example: Employee Picnic 001/2
3. Put on white cloth gloves when handling the photos and negatives
4. Remove pictures from original protective sleeves and look for dates and/or description printed on the back of the photo (Not all photos and negatives were labeled)
5. Place photos in a new protective sleeve
6. In Excel spreadsheet describe the photos and add the year
7. If there are negatives place them in a separate manila envelope and title it Example: NEGATIVES Employee Picnic 001/2n. Then place negatives in a new protective sleeve
8. If there are duplicates place them in a separate pile, when completed with the folder place duplicates in the duplicate folder for the drawer
