Kanopy is a streaming video platform that provides access to more than 20,000 films from leading producers, such as the Criterion Collection, California Newsreel, The Great Courses, PBS, New Day Films, BBC, and others. Click on the link below to search for documentaries and feature films hosted on the Kanopy platform.
Note: Faculty can request a video for purchase that they need for a class if it isn't already available.
It's easy to share films with others at UMW. Locate the film you want to share and click on the Share button. A new box will open with a persistent URL that you can give to others. Off-campus users will be asked to authenticate before viewing the film.
You can also embed films into other websites like a blog or course management system. To do this, click on the Share button and toggle over to Embed. This will provide with you with an HTML code to copy and paste into your website.
One of the first things you'll want to do on Kanopy is sign up for a personal user account. This will enable you to add films to a watchlist and create clips and playlists to share with others or save for later. Follow these steps to create a personal user account:
Once you're signed in, you'll be able to access your watchlist, recently viewed films, comments, and playlists.
You can create clips, or extracts of films, as well as playlists, which are sets of clips and films. To get started, click on the Create Clip/Playlist button and enter a name for a new playlist.
To add films to this new playlist, find the film you want to add, click on the Create Clip/Playlist button and then click Add video.
If you want to create a clip, click Edit playlist. This will take you to a new screen where you can select the start and stop time for the clip. When you're finished click on Save Clip.
