Researching in class

During the library workshop on September 9th, you'll have time to do research. Use this time to prepare for the project proposal, which is due on September 14th. Your proposal will include a bibliography of at least five sources.

Follow these steps to make the most of your time:

  • Make sure you have a place to take notes, either on your computer or on a paper notebook.

  • Search for topic ideas.
    • You can find topic ideas in Smarthistory, in the Heilbrunn Timeline, or in Wikipedia.
    • You can ask an AI chatbot for ideas for topics -- but remember you must acknowledge any use of AI.
    • Write down topics as you find them.
    • Try to find more than one topic idea, so that you can test the ideas and see which ones lead you to the most interesting sources.

  • For each topic, search for sources on that topic.
    • Use broad search terms to find books.
      • Feel free to leave the room to browse the shelves.
      • Remember that there are books on reserve for this class at the Circulation Desk.
      • Remember that you can find books at other libraries using WorldCat, and you can have them sent to UMW for free via interlibrary loan.
    • Use narrow search terms to find articles.
    • Keep track of what you find, either by saving documents to your computer or by writing down titles in your notebook.

  • When you find a good source, follow its citations to find other sources.
    • Use the "Cited by" feature in Google Scholar to find more recent sources that cite the source you found.

As you work, raise your hand to get help from Dr. DeLancey or Mr. Catlin.
